On Friday, September 1, there was a public meeting about the August 22 draft of a proposed “values” document to replace the Values and Practices document provided by Kendal Corporation (KCorp). You can read about that discussion here. The 40+ residents who attended that meeting agreed that the August 22 draft contained much good material, but that it needed substantial changes before being officially adopted. One of the ideas that came out of that discussion was the possibility of using an “interim” statement derived from the KCorp Values and Practices (which we currently use) but with all text related to Kendal Corporation removed.

A group of seven residents, led by Barb Smith, have come up with just such an interim document. It is a word-for-word copy of the KCorp document, except that all mentions of “Kendal Corporation”, “affiliates”, and the like have been removed. Instead of “Kendal Corporation”, “KCC” is substituted. (Let’s call it the “Proposed Interim document”.)

The Proposed Interim document can be read here.

You can read the current KCorp document here.

The August 22 document, being a draft, is not yet available for public download, but residents can read it on a password-protected web page, using the link found under “News You Can Use” on the resident website.

There is just one section in the Proposed Interim document that has actually been rewritten: the paragraph on environmental stewardship on page 12. It retains much of the language of the KCorp document, but adds material that is more specific to KCC. Apart from that, there is only minor editing.

The Proposed Interim document seems to me to be suitable as a temporary statement of values. One of its virtues is that it doesn’t represent too much of a change from the KCorp document that we have used for decades. I hope residents, staff, and administration alike will find it a good compromise, to be used until the community has time to come up with a statement that we can all get behind.
